Irish High Crosses

Donaghmore, Tyrone

A monastery was founded here by St Patrick for St Columb in the sixth century. Situated at a road junction at the west end of the village stands this large sandstone cross, it is believed to be either two separate fragments joined together or two fragments of the same cross with part of the shaft missing. The cross stands 4.8 metres high and is badly weathered. The north and south sides feature some ornament.

Head. Bears a Crucifixion scene, on the arms on either side of the crucifixion are three figures, the central figure on each of the arms may represent the two thieves being held by soldiers.

The east face, pictured below right, bears scenes from the bible that are linked to the high cross at Clones in County Monaghan. From the base up the scenes are,

East Face: 1. The Annunciation to shepherds.2. Adoration of the Magi.3. Baptism of Christ. 4. Marriage feast of Cana. 5. Loaves and Fishes. 6. Arrest of Christ or Ecce Homo.

Situated: In The village of Donaghmore, County Tyrone. From Armagh take the A29 north for Dungannon, from there look for signs for the B43 to Donaghmore, the cross stands at the centre of a junction at the north of the village.
